What is the John Wesley Adventure?

  • The John Wesley Adventure is a major reform movement in two stages, for churches and Christian groups, informing participants about the amazing life of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodists, the Nazarenes, the Salvation Army, and many others. In it, contemporary Christians are taught about the real John Wesley, and what he expected of his revolutionary church.

  • Stage I is The John Wesley Academy, a series of 21 weekly studies. Volunteers form a John Wesley Society, or small group of up to 30 people. They will read approximately 20 pages per week, covering some aspect of Wesley’s life. They will gather once a week to discuss what they read, and how it applies to the church today.

  • Stage II is The John Wesley Adventure. After completing the Academy and taking a break, your Society will reconvene to plan, and literally put into motion some of the Wesleyan principles you have learned. You will conduct a careful demographic analysis of your church and community, determining the people you want to reach for Christ. Then you will create ministries specifically for that purpose. You may also agree to adopt some of Wesley's personal disciplines over a period of time, holding one another accountable. You may also link up with other JWA Societies, via the Internet and at reunions, sharing your questions, ideas and success stories.

  • John Wesley's story is full of drama, romance, violence and cliff-hanging incidents where he preached at the risk of his life. Many of these are included in this exciting study. The Academy is also illustrated with pictures and scenes throughout. It is written approximately on the high school level. Though references are made to the author's denomination, the United Methodist Church, the Academy is usable in any church or Christian group that is basically Wesleyan in belief.
