"Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen, such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth."
(John Wesley, August 6, 1777)

John Wesley was one of the most amazing, productive Christians who ever lived. He lived in England from 1703 to 1791. For years he struggled to please God by good deeds and personal disciplines. In his mid-30s, already an ordained minister, he was converted, and began preaching enthusiastically, encouraging people to accept Jesus Christ. Both the institutional church and the drunken mobs rejected and persecuted him. Not discouraged, he continued preaching all over Great Britain. For over 50 years he traveled by horseback, preaching and teaching, and forming societies, or small accountability groups, everywhere he went. Many of his techniques for winning people are usable in the church today.
